Supply Remains Persistently Tight, Octanol Market Center Rises Sharply

Published on 2026-08-21

Lead: China's domestic octanol market accelerated its uptrend this week. On Friday, ex-works prices in Shandong reached 8,600–8,700 yuan/ton, up 550 yuan/ton from last Friday, marking the largest weekly gain for octanol in the past two months.

I. Supply remains tight, with industry inventory at low levels

Over the past month, China's domestic octanol capacity utilization has fallen to a medium-low level. This is mainly because severe cost inversion in the earlier period dampened producers' enthusiasm for running plants, and a relatively large number of manufacturers took the opportunity to conduct maintenance. In early-to-mid August, the average operating rate of China's domestic octanol industry was only 67%, with the rate dipping to 62–63% at the beginning of the month. By mid-to-late August, the operating rate had recovered to around 70%. However, given the substantial supply losses accumulated in the earlier period, industry inventory remains in a tight state, and downstream users' rigid-demand restocking has given the market strong upward momentum.

This week, operating rates also rose for octanol's main downstream sectors—plasticizers and isooctyl acrylate—thereby increasing market demand for octanol. DOP's weekly average operating rate reached 52%, up 4 percentage points week-on-week; DOTP's weekly average operating rate reached 66%, up 7 percentage points; and isooctyl acrylate's weekly average operating rate reached 65%, up 2 percentage points. With noticeable demand-side growth this week, the octanol market saw supply fall short of demand, and industry inventory continued to decline.

II. Feedstock propylene prices climb, pushing octanol costs higher

This week, spot prices for the feedstock propylene rose sharply. The macroeconomic environment provided a solid boost to market confidence, and with spot supply relatively tight, propylene market prices moved up gradually during the week, raising the propylene feedstock cost for octanol. As of Friday, octanol production costs in the Shandong region had risen to 8,100–8,200 yuan/ton, leaving profit margins at around 500 yuan/ton. The sharp price rally this week has markedly improved the profitability of octanol products, which may attract plants to ramp up operating rates. However, as octanol prices continue to climb, downstream users have grown cautious about procuring high-priced feedstock. Market participants are watching both the changes in octanol plant operating rates and the ability of downstream sectors to pass through high costs.

III. Octanol market expected to keep operating at high levels

On the supply side, the overall operating rate of domestic octanol plants is expected to remain at around 71% next week, with no major changes in plant operations. Market supply will remain in a tight state. With industry inventory currently at low levels and some enterprises holding a certain volume of pending orders, available spot resources are relatively limited, and supply-side support for the market remains strong. Given the notable improvement in octanol profit margins, some producers may not rule out raising output.

On the demand side, the downstream plasticizer industry is expected to maintain medium-to-high operating loads overall, providing stable rigid-demand support for octanol. End-use plastic products manufacturers will continue their buy-as-needed procurement pace. As Shandong octanol prices have gradually risen to the current high of 8,700 yuan/ton, production costs for plasticizer manufacturers have increased, and buyers' caution toward high-priced feedstock has become apparent, with most downstream users sticking to a demand-based purchasing strategy.

In summary, persistently tight supply and stable rigid demand will continue to support the octanol market at high levels, but resistance to consecutive price increases is intensifying. The expected pullback in feedstock propylene also weakens the cost-side driver. With bullish and bearish factors intertwined, the octanol market is expected to see only a modest uptick followed by consolidation next week, with the gain narrowing significantly from this week's rise.

Tight supply and low capacity utilization are finally pushing octanol margins back up, but feedstock propylene costs keep squeezing upside. I'd watch whether downstream plasticizer demand can sustain this pace or if buye..
