Mexico Unveils 2035 Greenhouse Gas Emission Targets, Approved by International Interdepartmental Committee

Published on 2026-01-04

Recently, Mexico's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) officially announced its greenhouse gas emission targets for 2035, which have been approved by the Inter-Ministerial Commission on Climate Change. Specifically, Mexico’s 2035 greenhouse gas emission targets are set under two scenarios: under the unconditional scenario (achieved solely with domestic resources), the carbon dioxide equivalent target range is 364 to 404 million tons; under the conditional scenario (contingent on international cooperation, such as financial support and technology transfer), the target range is 332 to 363 million tons. Additionally, black carbon emission targets have been clarified, with an unconditional scenario range of 358 to 397 million tons and a conditional scenario range of 326 to 358 million tons. It is reported that SEMARNAT first released its greenhouse gas emission targets in 2015, and this announcement marks the third revised version.
